Ten Eyck Apartments

The Administrative Headquarters for the Schenectady Municipal Housing Authority is housed at 375 Broadway. The Section 8 Offices are here, as well as Executive Offices of the housing authority, including Rent Collection. SMHA is the oldest housing authority in the United States, having been chartered by the City of Schenectady in 1934.

375 Broadway is also the address for Ten Eyck Apartments, SMHA’s high rise apartment building, with 100 One-Bedroom and Efficiency units for Elderly residents. Ten Eyck residents enjoy a service rich environment to enable the elderly to live independently in their homes. Noontime meals are available 7 days a week, intensive housekeeping, referrals, transportation, health and safety programming, recreational activities are also accessible.

Community Room: Dedicated in 1995 by Congressman Michael McNulty and Neil and Jane Golub, the facility has a full service commercial kitchen, a smaller meeting room known as the Chapel, and is used daily. Operated weekdays by Catholic Charities of Sch’dy, a Noon-time meal program, with wrap-around recreational, health and educational Programming is in place for the residents. The facility sports a working stage, with sound and lighting equipment, as well as a large TV!

Lincoln Heights

Build in 1943 for factory workers building tanks at the ALCO Locomotives plant, and Airplane Engines at GE, Lincoln Heights was named after President Lincoln.

Integrated in 1954 to families of all races, Lincoln Heights was again transformed in the 1960’s into a 100-unit garden apartment community for elderly and disabled residents.

With great views of the hills of Western Schenectady County, Lincoln Heights sports a laundry room and a community room with a kitchen.

Schonowee Village

Construction began in 1936, and the first tenants of the Authority occupied Schonowee Village in 1938. The Housing Authority main offices were first located at 402 Millard Street, and were later converted into apartments. Today, Schonowee is a diverse community of single and two member families that enjoy living within walking distance from the revitalized Downtown Schenectady.

MacGathan Townhouses

MacGathan Townhouses is a multi-family complex with 50 units. Bedroom sizes range from 3 to 5 bedrooms. It is close to the bus line and it is within walking distance to the Crosstown Plaza and Steinmetz Homes.

The MacGathan Community Room is located on the MacGathan Townhouse property. This community room is used by local agencies for children’s activities such as games and crafts. SMHA’s Board of Commissioners also hold meetings here.

Maryvale Apartments

Maryvale consists of 2 buildings with 4 units in each. Each apartment has 4 bedrooms and 1 1/2 baths. It is down the street from Woodlawn Middle School. It is close to the bus line and Mohawk Commons is within walking distance.

Steinmetz Homes

Steinmetz Homes is a Multi-Family complex with 243 units. Bedroom sizes range from 1 to 4 bedrooms. It is close to the bus line and it is within walking distance to the Crosstown Plaza.

A Boys and Girls Club of America is also located on the property, at 108 Henry Street.

FIC: The Family Investment Center is located at 120 Emmons Street on Steinmetz Homes. This building is home to SMHA’s Project Manager and Occupancy Specialist as well as SUNY Career Counseling, Better Neighborhood’s Inc. (BNI) and Washington Irving’s GED classes/courses.

Many local agencies use the FIC community room to conduct their meetings. In the summertime, the community room is used for a free lunch program for the children.

Family Investment Center

Yates Village

Our largest housing development, Yates Village offers 296 apartments for families in the Goose Hill neighborhood of Schenectady. Yates has a mix of apartment sizes, 1 to 5 bedroom apartments. Additionally, in E Court, residents can take advantage of an afterschool program {including sports, recreation, homework help and a computer center} provided by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady, as well as a full service Head Start Program offered by Schenectady Community Action Program.

Community Room: Located in E-Court, the community room is available for use by human service agencies, and the housing authority for the benefit of public housing residents. Resident Association meetings, programs for youth, Church services and summer lunch programming occur at the community room. The Community room serves as a polling place for the Schenectady County Board of Elections.

Maintenance Shop: Replacing a 30 year old 3 bay garage, SMHA utilized 2009 Stimulus funding from the Federal Government to rehabilitate the old garage, and construct a much larger, state-of-the-art Maintenance Garage, as well as a full service Project Office. A full time Occupancy Specialist and Project Manager work out of the office. Residents can complete most business with the authority right on site, except for rent collection, which occurs at Headquarters on Broadway.

Playground: A modern playground, with a state-of-the-art playground surface was built recently for children ages 0-12. Adjacent to the playground, is a popular basketball court, which is utilized by residents spring through fall. Both the playground and basketball courts were constructed in 2010, and can be used from dawn to dusk.
